Diamond Head Area?

We are not really familiar with Oahu since we normally go to Maui.

That said, we got a great air deal on a flight into Honolulu so we thought we would give it a try. We do not want to stay in a concrete high-rise and are looking for accomodations on the quieter side (that would fit 5 people).

I found a couple nice looking condos in the Diamond Head area on vrbo.com. Can someone please tell me if:

1. this area is safe

2. is the beach safe for children to swim

3. is this area walking distance to the activities of Waikiki.

Thank you so much.

Diamond Head Area?

The Diamond Head neighborhood is sandwiched between the cinder cone peak and Kapiolani Park, a 170-acre enclave which separates the area from Waikiki. It is much quieter and less dense than the resort district; however, the oceanfront accomodations will still be in mid-rise concrete buildings.

There are several excellent restaurants in the area (including Michel%26#39;s at the Colony Surf and the Hau Tree Lanai at the New Otani), and Kapiolani Park contains the Aquarium, Zoo and an extensive beachfront.

1. The area is very safe at all hours.

2. The beaches fronting the Park are basically an extension of the Waikiki strand, safe for children almost every day year-round....an outlying reef protects it from waves...with sandy and mixed-sand/rock bottom. Many residents come to the Kapiolani Park beach with their familes because it is safe for children, there are grassy areas for them to play, places to park, and trees near the beach for shade.

3. It is about a half mile or so from the Diamond Head area to the edge of Waikiki, and another 10 or 12 blocks into the center of the resort district....maybe a 20 to 30 minute stroll total through the Park down Kalakaua Avenue. It is all completely flat, with sidewalks and lighting.

Thanks for the response.
