What%26#39;s going on in Kona (or anywhere on the west side) for King K day? I looked on the King K website, but nothing is listed on the Big Island.
Is it much of an event?
King K day - June 11
Aloha, CJT, it is a bigger event on Oahu over at the palace.
King K day - June 11
This was listed on the BI.....

It%26#39;s a big event up in North Kohala -- his birthplace. Where the statue is in Kapa%26#39;au they will have a parade, food, music. I haven%26#39;t looked up this year%26#39;s plan, but they do it every year.
In 2005 I was living right there and meant to walk over but that year was rained out (not common).
Hilo should have something, and we have the other statue in a park here near the Wailoa River. I%26#39;ve not had a chance to look at a calendar though. If I find anything I%26#39;ll post it.
I should have checked -- the link islandshell kindly posted is all about the North Kohala day, do copy and paste into browser and read all about it. This is a very nice event; I recommend it highly if you%26#39;re on the island at this time, if you like small town country fair type good times for all events.
The statue really is beautiful covered in the leis. We photographed it last year. Hopefully this link will work.

On that page there should be photos of the statue both with and without the leis. Quite a few people up there during the celebration.
We wanted to see the statue in Hilo as well, but couldn%26#39;t make it over there on that day.
I am late to the party looks like. Yes, it is very well worth the time to check out the Hawi\Kapa%26#39;au events. I really miss those, remembering the drive from Hilo to Hawi, wearing my t-shirt with King Kam on it - I must have been 5 or 6 the first one I remember.
Do check it out if you are there in June.
Good luck and happy travels!
Mahalo, everyone.
The statue really does look beautiful with the leis. We%26#39;ll be on the Kona side that week, so I think we%26#39;ll plan our north Kohala day for the 11th.
Thanks!
tip -- suggest getting there early, as parking will extend far down the highway ... take umbrellas just in case (this is windward side), if you have umbrellas it won%26#39;t rain!
write us a report when you get back!
bumping the previous discussion as the time draws near ...
