Inter Island Travel Advice

Myself, husband, and two kids going to Oahu for majority of stay next week, but would like to go to The Big Island. Any advice appreciated on getting there. Have heard not to buy plane tix at the airport. Can we reasonably go for just a day or should we stay a night? My husband is in Oahu for a conference, so hotel is all paid for there. I wasn%26#39;t sure the cheapest we could expect to fly.

Use Oahu as a rest stop and maybe see a few things while you are here.

Take at least five nights on the Big Island; no point trying to fit it into one day, then regret 15 years later (DARN! I didn%26#39;t have time enough to see -- enter missed attraction, here --)

I%26#39;ll send you more info in P/M

IMO unless the whole family can go to another island and spend a few days, flying back and forth to another island for a day trip is a bad use of precious time and money in paradise. There is so much to see on Oahu, that you will not be bored. Check out some of the Oahu forums for advice for that island.

I%26#39;ve never felt it was wasted time doing a day trip if you have something in particular on one of the other islands you want to see. A week is a pretty short time and there is usually enough to keep us going for three or four days at least. If you are wanting to go to VNP on the BI try to find a flight into Hilo that will save some drive time however they don%26#39;t guarantee that you will see a lava flow and it maybe a long hike out to see it if possible.

They just had a fare sale of $9+tax but you can still find $39 o/w fares on three jet carriers and a little less on Island Air.

Thanks to all for your replies. Since my husband is in Oahu for a conference we only have a couple of weekend days to attempt the Big Island. Kids really wanted to see VNP. Other than that I know we%26#39;d be busy and happy in Oahu. It is so tempting though to know you%26#39;re all the way there and not see another island! I%26#39;ll just see what I can find with tix.
