Hello: We will be arriving in Honolulu 7:30 pm Apr. 3rd. We want to catch the 9:30 inter-island flight to Kauai. Will 2 hours be enough time to get checked luggage and hike to the departure part of the terminal ? Thanks for any help.
inter-island flightsIf you can web check-in and if your plane isn%26#39;t late, and if you hurry when you deplane and get near the front of the customs line ...
there are variables of course, such as whether another large flight arrives just before yours
you are supposed to check in 90 minutes before flight on inter-island.
What airline are you flying? Hawaiian%26#39;s web check-in is the best of the three because you don%26#39;t need to stand in the main line. Aloha%26#39;s is almost pointless as you have to stand in the line anyway, although it does ensure that you%26#39;re officially on the flight. Sometimes inter-islands are overbooked and/or people want to fly standby, in which case they can and do give your seats away if you haven%26#39;t checked in on time. So there%26#39;s more to it than physically getting to the gate before they close the flight.
If you fly Hawaiian you can select seats as well, a plus if you are running late. The others board according to who gets in line first.
inter-island flightsHi , we havn%26#39;t booked the island flight yet, but will probably go with Mesa Airlines as they are by far the cheapest.
You will pre-clear US customs in Calgary, if you are flying directly into the US (to HI or connecting somewhere in the US, such as SFO or LAX). If you are connecting in Vancouver, you will pre-clear US customs there. Canadians pre-clear US customs at their last point in Canada, before entering the US.
That will save you some time. Then there are the luggage waits.......
ah, I remember going through customs in Vancouver coming back from Europe, I wondered why we did it there instead of SFO.
The luggage generally comes out quickly. The most time-consuming thing for me has been standing in the line to check in and check the bags. If a lot of people are checking into your airline at that time it can be slow. Then the carry-on security line, again it all depends how many people are flying at that time and whether anyone in front of you slows things down.
Because you%26#39;re claiming your bags, you leave the secure area and have to go back through screening. If your bags were checked through you could remain in secure areas, IIRC. (I can%26#39;t always remember which flight was which at HNL).
You should have enough time, but I would still rather fly Hawaiian and not have to go through the line to the ticket counter and have an assigned seat. Plus I don%26#39;t like the smaller GO planes, very cramped, although I have to give them speedy in the air. I%26#39;ve flown them once and they were fast.
Aloha,
Thank you all for your help. Can%26#39;t wait to visit the Islands we are going to be visiting Kauai and the Big Island.
First timers are there any don%26#39;t miss spots on either island. We are interested in hiking and snorkelling.
There is a neat web site called alternative -hawaii.com The drive guides for the islands are good.
Hawaiiweb.com is another informative site. The beaches listings for the islands are good.
We will be on Kauai late April, early May for a return trip. Kauai is fantastic. We may try to make it over to the Big Island for a few days, but the lure of just enjoying two weeks of island time on Kauai seems to be winning out.
Enjoy your trip.
For KamaainaK:
RE: Pre-clearing US customs in Canada. Sorry, didn%26#39;t mean to suggest it was only for Canadians.
Thanks Love2vacation, thanks for your customs explanation, I learned something new!
Does that mean altarose could check bags through to Kaua%26#39;i?
If so, that would be ideal.
altarose, very important to know that Mesa/GO departs from the commuter terminal unlike Aloha from the inter-island terminal.
Going to wrong terminal would cause definite delay.
While looking for a good map of the terminals for you
map = hawaii.gov/dot/…hnl_terminal_map.htm
I found this EXCELLENT guide to connecting through HNL to interisland (courtesy of flyertalk).
flyertalk.com/forum/showpost.php?p=6787643
Highly suggest you read this post, very specific about different airlines arriving and departing HNL, time needed, etc..
You can either walk or take the WikiWiki shuttle. The shuttle drivers are very good about letting you off where you%26#39;re going. As you arrive in the dark, I suggest shuttle. Commuter terminal sits by itself.
Highly suggest you try to check your bags through, especially if catching last flight of the day, because if you don%26#39;t make the checked bag deadline your bags wouldn%26#39;t come until next day. Apparently GO only works with a couple airlines (see the Guide for specifics). HA and Aloha have baggage agreement with much more. Do check with your carriers. Also if you are picking up your bags, call GO and find out their deadline for getting your bags checked.
Have a great trip!
Thanks for the info, Kamaainak, your Flyertalk suggestion was very helpful. Does anyone know if GO! will interline checked baggage with Air Canada?
You%26#39;re welcome!
The flyertalk thread reports they have heard GO interlines with Continental only at HNL, but for the straight scoop I would simply call GO.
btw I see there are no flights late enough for you except on GO.
Just make sure you do a web check-in on GO before you leave home and print your boarding pass. One less thing.
