Beaches in front of the Grand Hyatt

Are the beaches in front of the Grand Hyatt swimable for kids ages 11 and 13.My son loves to boogie board. If this beach does not work any suggestions on a great beach to go to we there is waves and nice sand and maybe food and drinks served(Chairs and maybe umbrellas also).

The beach in front of the Sheraton is great. There were boogie boarders there when we were, too. No food or drinks (and I don%26#39;t think chairs and umbrellas), but that%26#39;s tough to find in Hawaii in general.

Beaches in front of the Grand Hyatt

Bedo:

Big time Boogie Boarding at Brenneckes Beach, which is right next to Poipu Beach park. Very, very popular boogie boarding and body surfing site on the south shore. Close break, sometimes, and be aware of the rocks on each side.

Shipwreck Beach, is mostly non swimmable, and the main users of this beach, are highly skilled local surfers.

Brennckes is only about a 4 or 5 minute drive from the Hyatt hotel.

It is immediately to the left of Poipu Beach park, ( snorkeling and swimming , sunnning and BBQing)

But, as in all ocean situations, safety and conditions should always be a priority. 13 drownings on Kauai last year. And none of them should have occured.

Just saw home videos this morning on TV, of a very obese woman, a couple of weeks ago, who ignored the HIGH SURF warnings, and went out at Ke%26#39;e beach. To take pictures out on the reef...!

20 foot faces, and very angry water, and rip tides, and strong currents. HELLO !

The hubby walks up to a local, who is on crutches and a cast, and says is wife is dying, and could someone call 911, Well, due to the mountains of the north shore, cell phones wont work.

He is told to go to a pay phone and given the location. The young man gives his crutches to his friend and heads into the raging water to help this woman. That young man, had just got of of a wheel chair a week earlier, and now was on crutches, and a boot.

He had two broken heels that had screws in them. Legs pretty much useless.

Well, he hauled hand over hand, out there, to the reef, , and saves the woman. At times she would be totally lost from sight beneath the waves. Then rolling across the reef, unable to maintain her footing.

There was absolutely no common sense used by the woman. Or her husband for letting her get into those raging waters. I dont care how they rationalize it.

We have HIGH SURF WARNINGS, the beaches were posted, no one else in the water, and if you saw the video, you would wonder WHAT WAS SHE THINKING. Also, she was totally out of shape and overly obese, and clumsy. but regardless, no one belonged in that water.

People, visitors, PLEASE, use some common sense. If it had not been for that young local, who was well aquainted with the ocean, she would have drowned. Flat dead , period ! As possibly would any novice onlookers going to her aid.

IN fact when the fire department personnel arrived, and they saw the young local, they said, it figured it would be him, since he was well known as a water man. Quite a hero, and he just dismissed all of the attention.

In the film, you could see other beach goers standing there watching, they knew that they were incapable, of making that rescue without endangering themselves. I would not have gone in there, and we are certified divers, and snorkel most every site on this island all year long.

But we sure dont snorkel the north shore in the winter , especially when HIGH SURF AND DANGER WARNINGS are posted, on the beach, phone surf reports,TV, on Radio, and in the paper.

So, my friends, please pay attention to the warnings, and for goodness sake use some common sense, and look at the conditions. STAY SAFE and HAVE FUN. You are not suppose to die on vacation, or cause others to drown trying to save someone.

WHEN IN DOUBT-DONT GO OUT !

Winter surf is smacking into the NE thru NW shores, go to poipu on the south shore. Usually small surf in the winter.

Incidentally, Erica and I are attending the OCEAN SAFETY CONFERENCE tomorrow ( friday)....an all day ocean safety program, and will pass on to the board what their ideas are.

The Waiohai is right at Brennekes. It%26#39;s not as nice as the Hyatt but if the beach is the imperative, might want to consider it. Ditto the condos/Sheraton just down the coast.

a lot depends on the time of year.

We always go to the beach in front of the Sheraton. You can go right over and order food and drinks at the beach bar. You can also rent cabanas even if you are not staying there. Chairs and umbrellas too I think. Might call ahead to do that.

We love that the food and restrooms and showers are all right there. All of these are open to the public.

Don%26#39;t know what the other post meant by there is no food available?

Have fun!

I read the OP as food and drinks being served on the beach, so that%26#39;s why I answered the way I did.

You are right..........i meant food and libations on the beach

Oops! I read that wrong. However the beach bar is right there...Walking a few steps isn%26#39;t so bad...Merry is right though, being served on the beach is pretty much out.

Although when we rented a cabana we got served food. You can always call and check it out.

Enjoy your trip!!
