Snorkeling to Molokini or Lanai?

Which has better snorkeling? We are going in April. THANKS!!!!

Snorkeling to Molokini or Lanai?

We%26#39;ve done them both, hands down, Lanai.

Snorkeling to Molokini or Lanai?

When you go to Lanai do you get to see turtles?

Here is a link to a thread that pretty much the same question was asked a while back.

Personally I prefer Molokini. When we went to Lanai there was alot of beautiful fish and amazingly clear water but the fish in the area we snorkeled were all beggars thanks to the snorkel companies throwing out their scraps to bring in the fish to the snorkelers. You%26#39;ll run into that in the areas that are not in protected areas but it was bad on Lanai where we snorkeled.

we snorkeled twice on lanai - once offshore with ultimate rafting (saw my first octopus!) and once took the ferry on our own %26amp; did shore snorkeling. we didn%26#39;t encounter beggars.(fishy ones or any other kind LOL)

what i don%26#39;t like about molokini is the crowds. in my experience, your tour operator wants to keep everybody in one area ( understandably, since they are responsible for your safety) %26amp; when there, i%26#39;ve spent more time dodging other people%26#39;s fins than actually looking at the fish. lanai isn%26#39;t as crowded %26amp; you have more freedom to swim where you will (in my experience). also, spinner dolphins frequently come in to the bay.

if you go to lanai on your own, stick to the left (facing the water) side of the bay. my goofball husband, when we arrived, saw people snorkeling over there %26amp; immediately insisted on going to the right. WRONG idea!

I agree Hulopo%26#39;e Bay on Lana%26#39;i is by far the best. It is a Marine Wildlife Sanctuary, with a very healthy reef, good variety of fish, clear water, and the fish do NOT beg. I have never seen anyone feeding the fish there (and we went snokeling 10 of the 14 days we were on the island this month). Turtles are rare there, but I have seen them, as well as a Manta Ray last year and an octopus this year. Also on Lana%26#39;i there is very easy sandy beach access.

This is good to know about Hulopo%26#39;e Bay. When we went we took the trip where they drop you off for a few hours on the island but that day it was too rough to snorkel there. That was easy to figure out since it looked like a surfing competition with all the surfers. So we sat and had lunch and watched the surfers and the 2 or 3 people that attempted to snorkel doing the bobbing cork thing.

Yes, we were very lucky this year with the mild surf conditions. But Hulopo%26#39;e is generally fine for snorkeling in the morning. Afternoon is often worse, so I would do a morning snorkel trip to Lana%26#39;i. You can never control the weather or surf conditions. On one boat trip we took out of Maui just for whale watching, we spent the entire time in the cabin due to high winds and the boat bouncing like crazy.

Lanai sounds great. I am returning to Maui this July and was planning to snorkel Molokini again. After reading this I may try lanai. Can you suggest a good snorkel tour that leaves from Maui?

Mahalo

we%26#39;ve only done Molokini but I hear Lanai snorkel trips are fabulous! It%26#39;s on our list of todos!

I think Trilogy does the best job, and in fact some other companies that take you to Lana%26#39;i do not actually go into port and land on the island. They just have you snorkel off shore. With Trilogy you spend time on Hulopo%26#39;e Beach in front of the FS resort.
