We have narrowed are decision down to three (I think). We are on a budget and the more money we save on room the more money we have to spend in Maui. However, I do not want to end up staying in a dump. We do not plan on spending much time in the room.
Right now we are in between Ka%26#39;anapali Beach Hotel, Lahaina Shores Beach Resort and Plantation Inn. Ka%26#39;anapali Beach Hotel seems to be the most expensive with the Plantation Inn being the cheaper of the three.
Any opinions on which of these to stay? Is the beach infront of Lahaina Shores Beach Resort swimable? Are LSBR and Plantation Inn in walking distance to downtown and the Old Lahaina Luau? I know that parking is hard to find in Lahaina. Is it also hard to find in Ka%26#39;anapali? Is there a fee to park when going to the beach? Thanks. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Staying in Ka'anapali, Lahaina area
when are you going? if beachfront/nice swimming beaches are important to you lahaina is not the place to be- if you prefer to stay in lahaina you would have to drive 30-40 minutes south to south kihei or wailea for the nice beaches in that direction or north to kaanapali where%26#39;s there%26#39;s not easy parking except whaler%26#39;s village which is $10. if you buy something for $10. in whalers village, you can redeem your parking fee though. kaanapali beach hotel is right on the kaanapali hotel strip with whaler%26#39;s village a short walk and the hula grill and lailani%26#39;s and also harpoon something bar/grill. hula grill has shows and live music right on the beach which was one of our favorites. the ride to lahaina is a breeze from there and there is a few free 3 hour parking lots if you don%26#39;t want to pay to park.i personally wouldn%26#39;t stay in lahaina, but that%26#39;s my taste after being there. it%26#39;s nice to walk a hundred yards or two to whalers after a long day and listen to live hawaiian music or a little show and have some appetizers and a few cocktails. what kind of atmosphere are you looking for? the beach in front of kbh is great and a few steps away is black rock- the best snorkeling spot in that area. kbh like you said or a condo just north of there would be my choice on a budget. more info?
Staying in Ka'anapali, Lahaina area
Luckychuck,
We are going in August for 6 nights. Ideally we would like to be in an reasonable priced hotel/resort (around $200 or less per night) that is on or near the beach. We would love to be in an area where there are things going on around us especially in the evening. The stuff you described on down the beach from KBH sounded great. Although we will have a car , we would prefer to not spend a lot of time in the car so we want to be a short drive away from most things we want to do. (snorkeling, jet skis, Old Lahaina Luau, ect) We are planning a couple day excursions to see different parts of the island.
Thanks for letting me know about the beaches in Lahaina. I realize other the KBH the places I said are not my ideal, but I am trying to weigh the difference in prices.
You mentioned condos that are further north. Any that you suggest? Thanks : )
Aloha!
Have you considered the ResortQuest Maui Kaanapali Villas?
Beachfront, pretty grounds, restaurant on site, and a good location! You can get a studio with a FULL kitchen.

i did a quick search and kbh looks pretty booked for august. it is considered low season at most hotels but a popular vacation time. unless you%26#39;re willing to go at least between 200-300 per nite i think being along the kaanapali strip ( sheraton to the hyatt), i think it%26#39;s gonna be kinda tough and even then it would be hard to get any kind of view. you looking for a studio-they%26#39;re cheaper?
i%26#39;m looking for the same criteria as you for next fall so i%26#39;ve been looking ALL over. i don%26#39;t mind driving a little- 10-20 minutes to bbe at whaler%26#39;s village at nite. you can redeem the 10. parking by slowly buying your souvenirs-coffee mac nuts etc.
i%26#39;ve been researching different scenarios- 3 weeks wife and me, 2 weeks wife me and 2 kids(adults), etc. for a while now so i%26#39;ve looked around. to do it on a budget make a list places to stay, price and their good points and bad points you%26#39;re looking for. after you do that you and your sig. other can look at all the possibilities and weigh them out.
on a budget you probably will have to agree on what bad points you%26#39;re willing to accept. mine would be the hassle of a short drive and we like doing day trips, trying different places to eat, and right above the sheraton there are 2 deli%26#39;s with good take out -cj%26#39;s and another further north for take outs which have great menus. you can find condos for under $200 by owner, for example look up valley isle resort.com. i like a 1 b.r. condo there rm. 1010 - check that one out and the price. has GREAT view n nice rooms and furniture, kitchen in case you want to buy a few things to do yourself, a sandy beach, pool fitness center, and i%26#39;m sure the front desk would help with any info. that%26#39;s the kind of place i%26#39;m looking for. a view off the lanai is a big plus for us. mahana also looks nice and had good reviews but is a little above your $200. hope that steers you in the right direction. RESEARCH is the key! also try to get plane tickets WELL in advance and preferably during the week is another way to save.
luckychuck...Have you considered staying in Kihei? The beaches are great and the complexes are much more affordable. You can stay oceanfront at Sugar Beach resort, be on a great swimming beach and have a nice oceanfront pool with and oceanfront unit for $150.00 a night. Check VRBO.
I am going to Maui on Feb. 3rd and just rented a condo using the following web site - worked out great - beautiful condo, grounds, full kitchen, beautiful pool/sauna, tennis courts, etc.... check it out! Only ended up being $130/night and ours sleeps 5 people! I think that%26#39;s a lot less than any room you can rent.

yes, i%26#39;ve checked all the hotels/ condos out in that area also and am considering it. have been on all the owner .com%26#39;s and have #%26#39;s written down of the ones that seem to fit our criteria, some of them being a semi-unobstructed view of the ocean/ sunset, good pool (but not that important), upper floor, air cond. a must, do not want to look out the lanai and have a view of mountains, or straight on at other condos with no other view, recently refurbished or real nice. has to be from kamaole beaches-south. different atmosphere than kaanapali but definately one i would like. wailea beaches are close enough that if you go early you%26#39;ll find a parking spot. can%26#39;t ask for more than that not staying in a hotel. i figure for what i spent on our anniv. at the sheraton in october, i could stay for a month in a condo for that $$. i%26#39;m going to ';study'; it until i make a decision and book it in march/ april for sept/oct.
