I think we are going to skip out on the resort thing, i.e. Four Seasons, etc, and instead opt for a rental. Out of these on vrbo, any one have an opinion as to which one is highly recommended?

Which is the best rental in Kaanapali for a honeymoon?
As you have seen, I think that the Sheraton with daily maid service, a special pool, pool bar, on-site restaurant and wonderful beach is the best choice, but of these on your list... Snorkeling is also good right off the beach at Black Rock.
Of these choices, I would go for the Whaler for location and price.
Keep in mind that all accomodations labeled as Kaanapali are NOT in the same area!
The Sheraton and the Whaler are close to each other at the best end of the beach for the Kaanapali area. My next choice would be the Kaanapali Ali. It seems to be an older crowd, but in a nice location still within walking distance of Whaler%26#39;s Village and the rest of the restaurants and bars in the area. The beach is not quite as wide or as protected there IMHO.
Lots of the others are north of the Sheraton around the point. The beach is not as good there. You will need to drive to get to the entertainment and restaurants that would be within walking distance of the Sheraton or the Whaler. Of these, the Mahana would be my choice. Great waterfront views, but the beach is not good for swimming.
Which is the best rental in Kaanapali for a honeymoon?
Maui Kaanapali Villas is north of Black Rock but has a great beach. On site restaurant too. We like to stay at the Whaler but if it was my honeymoon and had no kids in to I%26#39;d go for the Sheraton.
The Masters is supposed to have a 30 day minimum rental period. Some of their units are nice but you have to drive and park to get to the beach. I agree with Mauiboundsoon and recommend The Whaler. Like he said, most on your list are not really on Kannapali. Only the Marriott, Whaler, and Alii are there. Most of the others are in an area North of black rock called Honokowai. Imo, and most others on this forum....the beach down there is not as good and there is a lot of coral and reef. The area directly in front of The Whaler and Sheraton have the best stretch of beach.
We stayed at the Westin Kaanapali Villas last fall and liked it. The things we liked about it were:
newer/updated rooms with nice decor (nice tile in bathroom, larger shower, granite counter tops, nice soaking tub).
beach - it was NOT overcrowded like the main part of Kaanapali Beach south of the black rocks (we have stayed down there before). The beach is long for walking and not crowded at all. There was excellent snorkeling right off shore - you don%26#39;t even have to go far for that.
It is close to the things you want to see/do without being busy/crowded.
The restaurant was lacking but we only ate there once or twice. I don%26#39;t recommend it other than getting something simple for lunch by the pool. This didn%26#39;t matter too much to us though because there is so much to do in Hawaii you are out and about most days so you just get something to eat while out. The pool was pretty basic though it did have a small water slide and whirlpool. We stayed in a studio and those did not have a balcony - just sliding doors you can open.
I would stay there again and I plan to!
I am no Maui expert but wanted you to know there is a section on trip advisor where you can type in hotels, Maui and they will all come up and those you mentioned will come up. We are also honeymooning in mauia nd staying at 3 places. The Hyatt, the Mahana and the Grand Wailea. We picked the Mahana for the reviews. The people there have been so sweet eeven though we haven%26#39;t met.
We are more condo-people so we stay at the Maui El Dorado (it%26#39;s too expensive to eat out every meal). It is a short walk to Black Rock in front of the Sheraton and Maui El Dorado has their own beach cabana that you can walk to or their golf cart will take you there. The cabana has cooking facilities, fridge, indoor shade area to play cards, etc., .
We have stayed at K209 for the past 15 years. It is a studio condo with an ocean view (from a distance). We decided to try a one bedroom at J206 this September. It is closer to the ocean. We like to cook or BBQ and sit on our lanai and wattch the sunset.
The condos come completely stocked with all the kitchen accessories you will need plus and washer and dryer so you don%26#39;t have to pack too much. Also you can easily walk to Whaler%26#39;s Village or any of the Kaanapali hotels for meals, water sports, etc. There is also a shuttle that will take you to Lahaina.
The price is right for a great location.
