Black Sand

Can anyone help?

My sister has heard of a beach (we think is located in Maui) with black sand. Does anyone know what beach it is?

Black Sand

Waianapanapa State Park, on the road to Hana has a black sand beach. The small Honokalani black sand beach there is composed of small lava pebbles.

Also located near this beach is a heiau or flat raised area which was once a temple, a sea arch, sea caves and blow holes.

Black Sand

Thanks,

Could you tell me how long of drive it is to Waianapanapa State Park from Kaanapali?

About 3 hours, perhaps a tad less, but plan for up to an hour more.

and to fully appricate what that drive involves...... see any of many topics on the road to Hana

If you are also going to be on the Big Island, let us know and I can tell you where there are some easy to get to black sand beaches, with coal-black sand.

On Maui, there is also a black sand beach in Makena State Park. That is a short drive south of Wailea. See info at

Click on ';view candid traveler photos';... you%26#39;ll be able to see the beach.

Honu Ohana- Yes, PLEEEEEASE tell of the easily accessible black sand beaches on the BI or elsewhere. We%26#39;re gonna be on a cruise (Hilo, Maui, Kona, Kauai) and haven%26#39;t been able to find one that seems doable. Thanks!

Punaluu Beach Park on the Big Island is your place ... the sand there is the blackest I%26#39;ve seen ... more than Waianapanapa...

It is not far from Hilo at all ... a bit south ... and you can do it on the day you dock in Hilo. (Probably want to rent a car, although I%26#39;m sure some of the tours stop there.)

It%26#39;s good for sunbathing but a bit rocky for swimming ... there are usually turtles.

A very nice, very quiet black sand beach on the Kona side is at 49 Black Sand, a luxury home development (multimillion dollar properties) inside the Mauna Lani Resort.

To get there, you would drive about an hour NORTH from Kailua (half hour from airport). Enter Mauna Lani Drive, go to rotary, floow sign to 49 Black Sand.

There is PUBLIC ACCESS to the beach. It used to be a county park. Tell the guard you want beach access, he will let you thru and tell you where to park. There is a restroom. You can%26#39;t wander around off the beach or use the pool, etc. but it%26#39;s uncrowded and there is even decent snorkeling to the left and right off the beach.

BIG CAVEAT: Watch the time! The afternoon ';rush hour'; can make it take 2 or more hours to go back south to Kailua...it starts after 2 or 3 pm. GO there in the morning!

Thanks Kona %26amp; Honu. We hadn%26#39;t planned on renting a car b/c we%26#39;re afraid of getting lost while the ship sails off without us. But maybe we can find an excursion... We%26#39;ll definitely keep these in mind!
