I%26#39;m looking at doing a half - to - full day hike while on Oahu. I%26#39;ve done Diamond head and Manoa falls, the busy tourist trails but I%26#39;m looking for something different. Does anyone have any favorites/recommendations?
Recommended Hikes?
Hi Megs,
How did you like Manoa Falls? I plan on going next month ( first time to the islands )
here%26#39;s a list Dusty posted a few weeks in reply to the same question.....
Manoa Falls %26amp; nearby Lyon Arboretum.
Kapena Falls %26amp; nearby Liliuokalani Gardens. Waikahalulu Falls is in Liliuokalani Gardens. Judd Memorial trail (Jackass Ginger) is also nearby

Recommended Hikes?
My brother %26amp; his wife were just here. They are really into hiking.
They really liked Kaena Point. Saw several whales %26amp; monk seals %26amp; several sea birds. I dropped them off on the Leeward side ( near Makaha) and picked them up on the north shore side (near Mokule%26#39;ia %26amp; Dillingham Airfield). Its about 5 miles.
No shade on the trail.
They said it was the best hike they have ever taken on Oahu. They have also done Manoa Falls, Diamond Head %26amp; Makapuu Lighthouse trails and a couple others.
They said the better half of the hike was the north shore side. So you could hike just that half %26amp; then back if you don%26#39;t have someone to drop you off on one end.
Don%26#39;t leave anything valuable in your car while hiking anywhere on Oahu.
You can look at these sites for hiking trails. Some are half day hikes:

Another enthusiastic vote for Kaena Point.
Also, the Kaliwa Ridge Trail above Lanikai on the windward shore is a good one. Hot, sweaty climb but the view from the WWII observation bunker is to die for (which could happen if you don%26#39;t watch your step; the trail traces a knife-edged ridge.) The trail is fairly short and quite steep, but you%26#39;ll go home with pictures no one else has.
Thanks for the help! Looks like I%26#39;ll be adding Kaena Point on to my must-do-list. Maybe Jackass Ginger too.
Troy - do you hike at home (Canmore, Kananaskis etc.)? I would compare Moana falls to Johnstone Canyon or the Lake Louise teahouse. Its scenic but almost as many people as trees! Guess it depends what you are looking for, it is a beautiful area of the island just don%26#39;t expect isolation. Diamond head is a good choice for your 1st time in Oahu just go early, it get%26#39;s really busy!
Thanks Megs!
Excellent comparison.
Diamond Head is #1 on our list, but also wanted to see some %26#39;rainforest%26#39;, since we practically live in the desert!
Have a good trip!

We really enjoyed both Diamond Head and Manoa Falls. We did them the same day. The views from Diamond Head are incredible and seeing the bamboo and rainforest was really interesting-definitely not something we see here in Oregon.
