We are going to Maui in August (7 of us) - 5 adults and 2 kids (2 1/2 and 8)
The in-laws and nephew are watching our 2 1/2 yr old for a day so Mom and Dad can have some alone time and do a snorkel tour (rest of the time we%26#39;ll go from the beach). We are trying to decide what to do...
We booked our luau through Boss Frog and considering booking snorkeling through them... Any other recommendation? I%26#39;ve reviewed Trilogy but it looks pretty expensive.
We don%26#39;t want to spend too much $$$ but also don%26#39;t want to go on a tour with 200 other people at the same time. 30 would be great but is it realistic?
Any feedback on Boss Frog would be great too...
Boss Frog or other Snorkeling Tours
Last year we booked through the Maui Dive shop Molokini and Turtle snorkel ($50/pp for 3 hours). We booked the night before (pretty late...maybe after 7pm) and they were flexible and we got on the trip. This is the no frills trip but I loved it. Really, how much time can you spend looking at the same fish...save your self some money and do a shorter trip with fewer people (only about 12 on our trip out - this is just about the capacity of the boat) and you must do the morning trip. Saw and swam with several turtles which was amazing. The boat is not very elaborate but it gets you where you need to go fairly comfortably and the people who took us out seemed very knowledgeable. They provided sodas and a small snack (cookies if I remember correctly). I would not waste the extra $ and get a full lunch (really, how great can the food be). I did not use the bathroom on the boat, but since it was not fancy I would have to suggest going before you get there.
Boss Frog or other Snorkeling Tours
We used Boss Frog Nov of %26#39;05. On the Four Winds III (I think). No complaints.
WE just went on the teralani a few weeks ago. No complaints. Crew was fun the boat was nice and I would say that there were around 40 people on board. They do trips right off of Kaanapali beach and take you north? to two locations. The day we went it was Kapalua bay and Honoloa bay. Both of these can be accessed on your own but we had a 3 year old and a 7 month old so the boat was easier for Honolua. We saw tons of spinner dolphins. The crew even turned the boat around so we could have a chance to see more of the dolphins. We also saw and swam with turtles. We enjoyed the company and the boat ride too. I think that was the best time the 3 year old had and he didn%26#39;t even get in the water. ( they have those boogie boards with the windows in them but my son was a big wimp) We managed to get him in for about 1 minute and then he freaked out. The crew was very helpful and did a great job working with him and everyone else on the boat. Lunch was good but breakfast was sparse.
Hey FLMauibound-
I%26#39;ve got a 2.5 yr old. How did your 3yr old do on the cruise? Who stayed with him on the boat while you snorkeled?
My son loved the boat ride. Think it was his favorite part of the trip. He loves water but on his own terms so he didn%26#39;t snorkel but could have. They had a life jacket for him and the boogie board with the window. He was fine until we made him lay on the board and then he started crying so that was the end of that (after I got a great photo of him crying in the water of course) Even with not getting in the water he never got bored and I think it was a five hour tour. It was me, my husband, and my mom on the trip so we rotated one person on the boat with the kids and two in the water. You lose some of your snorkel time but it was still plenty of time for me.
I just returned from Maui. I used Maui Dive Shop for my snokeling tour. We went to Molokini first. The view is wonderful. You can see the bottom of the ocean and lots of fish. Then they take you to Turtle Town. I was so surprised, for the first time in my life I saw some sea turtles!! They were swimming right next to me!
I took the 7am trip and got back around 10am. There were 24 people total. I didn%26#39;t want to do a longer trip as I didn%26#39;t want to be in the direct sun all day.
Hi,
Last July we went on a snorkeling cruise with Pacific Whale Foundation. It was terrific and affordable. The crew was very informative, and we loved snorkeling with a guide. She was able to point out great sea life.
The food was good, liquor was available and it didn%26#39;t feel too crowded, I think around 50 - 75 people.
The ocean was very rough during the return and the staff was very professional in providing aid to seasick folks.
Have fun!
