We are planning on a 2 week trip this summer to Hawaii with our 2 children aged 14 and 16. Which island/islands do you recommend that we stay on and how do we arrange travel between islands? Is there a certain airline that flys from island to island? Also, any hotel recommendations would be appreciated. Miniumum 4 star. We want to make the most of this vacation, yet still have time to relax.
First time to Hawaii suggestionsthis question is not possible to answer easily
Maui might be best for the kids at the beach Suggest Ritz Carlton or the Grand Wailea or Four Seasons as the only hotels in your range of 4 star Maui is very developed and has everythint from magic shows on the beach to zip-lines
Big Island 6 times the size of Maui but 1/2 the population for Snorkeling and adventure and variety without people. Rugges and huge.... it takes 6 days minimum to see it... 8to 10 hours to drive around it non stop
4 star hotels would be Four Seasons, ( conde nast rates as best in Hawaii... the state) Fairmont, Mauni Lani, and Kona Village Resort. all the rest I rate lower.
Hilo is a non resort town
Kona a beach town
Kohala coast resorts in a lava desert but some with beaches
Volcano.. a rainforest wilderness
Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea... alpine in Hawaii
Look at the what to do on each island and se what it is that meets your wants and needs.....
First time to Hawaii suggestionsAirlines would be:
Aloha
Hawaiian
Go
Island Air
There are some smaller charter type flights also but they cost a bunch more.
Hawaiidan ...thanks for your very efficient description of the vast big island ....very helpful since we are also planning our first visit ...Any shopping at all along the kohala coast ?? or anywhere on this island ??
You might try posting this question in the Hawaii forum (the entire state). You are in the Island of Hawaii forum (one island also know as the Big Island).
There is shopping at the Kings Shops in Waikoloa. They have Louis Vuitton, Burberry, etc.,, then on the other end of the shopping scale, they have T-shirt shops, Aloha wear shops, etc.
There are fine jewelry stores, and an art gallery.
There is an area where you can eat DQ, Subway, etc.,or there is Roys and....ug, can%26#39;t remember the other one (and we even went there one night!) it%26#39;s a finer restaurant.
BIPS from Oklahoma ... I AM Talking about the BIG ISLAND .. it will be my first visit and want to know if there is any place to shop?? Sounds like Volcanos, Hiking, Sea Turtles, Scuba Diving, Big Resorts, ...any place to shop ??
No gogirl, we still walk around half naked here! :) The Big Island is not a shopper%26#39;s paradise but in addition to the usual touristy shop we do have one department store in Kona (Macy%26#39;s) and several more upscale stores at the Waikoloa Beach Resort. In addition, there is a mall in Hilo.
GoGirl, I was answering the original poster, tripplannerToronto who was asking about which islands to visit in Hawaii. They had posted it to the Big Island forum instead of the Hawaii forum. To answer your question about shopping on the BI, I just got back from a week%26#39;s stay there. While I am not really into shopping while on vacation we were being visited by 2 of my friends who are so we went to the Shops in the Kohala area you%26#39;ve already been told about, 2 Kona outdoor markets, downtown/waterfront Kona where Bubba Gumps is, King%26#39;s Mall next to King Kam hotel, Hilo Hatties, the shopping center just south of Hilo Hatties, and WalMart for souvenirs and mac nuts. Whew, that was enough shopping for the next several trips to Hawaii for me!
