Plan my Hawaiian Honeymoon!

Hello! Everything I%26#39;ve read sounds so great I can%26#39;t decide! My fiance and I are planning to honeymoon in Hawaii and we%26#39;ve got our flights down, but that%26#39;s about it!

The Basics:

- Aug 6 - 19 flying into Honolulu

- Skipping Oahu (both done it already)

- Planning to visit Maui (5-6 nights), Kauai (4-5 nights), and the Big Island (3-5 nights)

- Want to do scuba, snorkeling, horseback riding, road to hana, haleakala, maybe cooking and/or dancing lessons, hiking, and surfing

The Questions:

- What areas are best during August?

- Is it possible to have our luggage transferred from the mainland flight to Maui/Kauai/BI without picking it up in Honolulu?

- What order is best to visit?

- What am I forgetting?

Thanks!!!

Plan my Hawaiian Honeymoon!

Well, if you haven%26#39;t already booked, I would narrow it down to 2 islands max . . . too much time wasted in airports/car rentals, etc. Since you are going in August, for Kauai I would stay on the Northshore - it%26#39;s at it%26#39;s glory then- beaches/swimming and snorkeling are great. Another question - do you want to be busy or relax when you first get to Hawaii?? Save Kauai for the relaxing part. Best of luck and congrats to you both! :)

Yes, your luggage can be transferred on to your next island without claiming it in HNL.

It%26#39;s your trip, but I wouldn%26#39;t want to race around that much and waste time doing all those ';hops';. The flying time is brief, but the whole procedure of packing up, dropping a car, time for airport security, claiming luggage, renting another car, checking in -- whew! The better part of a day is shot.

I%26#39;d save Big Island for another trip. It%26#39;s HUGE compared to the others and you%26#39;ll be driving all over to see it. It%26#39;s also farthest south and gets HOT.

Do you want hotels or condos? Summer is good to stay north on Kauai. Maui is good everywhere, but if you want what little nightlife it offers, you%26#39;ll stay West Maui; South Maui has more posh hotels and is quieter. Maybe you%26#39;d like to stay in Hana?

Are 3 islands really too much for 2 weeks? We%26#39;re East Coasters and my fiance insists I%26#39;ve got adult ADD. I%26#39;m worried I%26#39;ll get bored, he wants to make sure we%26#39;re not rushing around (usually this works out ok, i swear!).

So if you had to pick, we%26#39;re doing Maui, shooting for the Thai Treehouse in Makawao, so probably doing something more resort-y in Kauai or BI. Which island to spend the second week???

Aloha!

I would say 2 islands max!

I would go to Kauai and then over to Maui.

I would spend 6 nights on Kauai and 7 on Maui.

BOTH Kauai and Maui will offer what you said you are looking for.

I would opt for a condo on at least 1 of the islands so you can cook some meals, wash clothes, etc.

I agree w/Bryan. Get to Kauai and get past the jet lag/wedding high. This is the better island to try a ';tree house'; type place. You%26#39;ll probably want to be in the northern part of Kauai in August: Princeville area. Enjoy the beaches and more rural aspects of Hawaii on Kauai. I%26#39;d probably spend less time Kauai and more Maui. Maybe five nights, seven nights.

Maui has a wider choice of lodgings. This is the ';more-to-do'; place so I wouldn%26#39;t stay up in Makaweo, but stay West Maui -- in the Lahaina/Kaanapali area where the ';buzz'; is.

Hi!

We are going to Hawaii too for our Honeymoon from May 28-June 9. We are flying into Oahu and staying (1) night to catch up w/ time and to see Pearl Harbor. We are then flying to Maui for 5 nights and then Kauai for 6 nights and staying at the Hyatt on both islands.

My fiance and I purchased 2 books at Borders this weekend and picked up ';the Ultimate Kauai Guidebook'; and the Frommer%26#39;s ';Maui day by day'; books. We haven%26#39;t put them down since we picked them up! They don%26#39;t just give you the blanket %26#39;this place is good%26#39; etc, etc they tell you what is good, what is not and what roads to take as well as good/bad dining choices...Good luck!

I think that the other posters are correct. Two islands will be plenty. The thing that you%26#39;re not factoring into your schedule is the time that it takes to get to and from all your planned activities, as well as the preparation time once you arrive at the activity, i.e., being checked out on the scuba equipment, discussing your riding ability and being matched with a horse, etc.

There are many roads that simply will not allow for rushing. It%26#39;s the same in any coastal area. The driving time is always twice a long as you think it will be, because the map never shows all the winding bits where the road follows the coast line.

Adult ADD or not, this is your honeymoon and you don%26#39;t get any points for speed. Besides, Island Time is what it is, and nobody else will be rushing, so you may as well relax and enjoy it.

YOu need 2 weeks to enjoy Big Island fully. We stayed there for 9 days and barely skimmed the surface. We went to Maui for 12 days and felt we did just about enough justice to the place. hawaii is just not about sightseeing. There is so much to do and experience. I would in fact just do 1 island.

Thanks for all the advice!

We cut out the Big Island,

doing Maui for 7 nights at the Thai Treehouse

6 nights at Hanalei Bay Resort.

Thanks!!!

I too would cut it down to two Islands and I would leave Maui last. The reason being you can fly out easier to LA or San Francisco without having to fly back to Oahu. If your taking the nonstop with Continental out of Newark than save the ralxing islands either Kauai or the Big Island last.

If you do go to the Big Island you must spend the extra money and stay at the Four Seasons and get a room with the outdoor shower.

On Maui if you can when you do the road to Hana book a room for one night at the Hotel Hana. This way you wont be rushed and tired from all the driving (Especially if you stay up in Kaannapali). I would do the sunrise tour and bike trip down Haleakala, it was quite an experience.

As with everything in Hawaii, activities are pricey so shop around before you go. %26#39;

Have a great trip and good luck on your marriage!
