We will be visiting Maui in July %26#39;07 for 9 days. We plan to snorkel a lot. What is the water temperature during the summer months? Would we require wet suits?
Water temperature in July for snorkeling
I do not know the exact water temperature, however you will NOT need wet suits. The summer months are warm. The air temperature is in the 80%26#39;s to upper 80%26#39;s during the day and the evenings are in the 70%26#39;s. That%26#39;s Fahrenheit. Ocean will be cool when you first go in, but is very pleasant while snorkeling. You will enjoy!
Water temperature in July for snorkeling
I have traveled to the islands in July for several years and have found the water to be very comfortable.
Compared to Northern California, it is a warm bath!
As a previous poster stated, it is initially cool, but once you start moving around the water is quite pleasant. I have found that it is comfortable enough to stay out for well over an hour if I want. Just be sure that you protect your shoulders and back from the intense sun.
Enjoy your trip!
No wet suit needed, but highly recommend a rash guard. You can pick one up for around $20 at Kmart in Kahului.

My standard answer for this question:
http://www.nodc.noaa.gov/dsdt/cwtg/index.html
It%26#39;s the National Oceanic and Atmosphereic Administration site showing montly average (and in some cases actual current) water temps all along the the US coast, from Alaska to Maine and out to the various islands of Hawaii.
An extremely useful and interesting site.

PS - I%26#39;ve just posted an ';Inside Page'; on this subject (since it comes up so often). Feel free to edit or amend as you folks see fit:

Thanks Texasfriends, lwj, dengay, LordBalfor!
GlobeTrekkkers, I believe the water normally runs around 78-80 give or take and yes it%26#39;s not bad to snorkel in but wetsuits help alot. Even at those temps it can still sneek up on you. If you snorkel a while you will start to notice you%26#39;re shivering and have goosebumps. We always wear wetsuits so we can stay in the water longer. They help with floatation also. Both qualities help with fatigue while snorkeling. We have 2MM shorties we use.
