Hi folks!
I have a 10 day layover out of Honolulu and I was thinking of spending the time on Maui as I have seen the main island and BI. The problem is I am an older woman (let%26#39;s just say over 50) traveling alone, returning from a trip to Australia and will no doubt be needing to ';squeeze the pennies'; by this portion of the trip. I was considering camping or even staying at a hostel (Banana Bungalo or something like that) and just taking the local buses to the beachs. Would this be crazy? Would the buses take hours to get any where?I am more interested in seeing Maui and doing some snorkling than the luxury thing, but I sure don%26#39;t want to sleep with bugs and crawly things either! What do you think, especially you local advisors, can I see Maui as a budget traveler and still enjoy myself do you think or will I really regret it and wish I had just booked a flight home from OZ?
Where to stay if you are traveling alone?
Less expensive areas on Maui are Maalea and North Kihei. Look on vrbo to see exactly what you%26#39;re getting and to rent direct from an owner. You will want to rent a car to see the sights. A subcompact is fine.

ChiSue, Thank you for responding to my inquiry. Forgive my ignorance but what is vrbo?
vacation rental by owner - just google vrbo and it will pop up.
Try Kihei Kai Nani in South Kihei.... nice little complex across the street from a great beach and in a nice centrally located area. There are more that I can recommend...
