Car Rental: Costco VS Hawaii Discount Car Rentals

Hi everyone! Been enjoying reading the posts and gathering valuable information and tips ! I have a question and would love to hear some replies if anyone would have any advice for me! We are staying in South Kauai (Kuhio Shores) April 17 thru April 29 of this year. I%26#39;m getting ready to get the car rental reservations taken care of. We are presently not members of Costco but have read where people have had good luck with prices on car rentals thru them. Our condo also has a car rental referral site you can go through (the Hawaii Discount Car Rental). I know if we join Costco we can then shop at the one in Kauai (is it located in the southern part of Kauai?) so that is a bonus. Any info is appreciated!

I got a very good rate with Alamo last summer renting through the Costco website. Use the link from the Costco site to the different rental companies to see which one has the best rate. Alamo didn%26#39;t ask for Costco membership number during the booking or when picking up the car. I did have to show them the coupon printed from the Costco website.

The Costco Car Rental Discounts are a percentage off the going rate -- sometimes that is way better than the fixed rates the online discounters offer and sometimes it%26#39;s not such a good deal. You just have to crunch the numbers with the different discount codes.

Same thing applies to the AARP rate. Sometimes AARP offers an unbelievably good rate. Sometimes it just doesn%26#39;t match the discount deals.

Either way you do it, make sure that you will not be paying more for something you might take for granted -- extra driver for example. Some of the car rental discounters have a special contract with the rental car companies that offer 2nd and 3rd driver free, where you might pay $5 of $6 per day otherwise. That adds up. Same thing for ';young driver fees'; which are waived with some contract discounters. You might look into www.hawaiidrive-o.com

If I were you, I wouldn%26#39;t get a Costco card just for a week on Kauai. But, if you are planning to get one to use in your hometown anyway, then just pick up the Travel magazine they have by the door and crunch some numbers online with the codes in the car rental section. Then pay attention to the policies regarding 2nd drivers, etc., if that is important to you. You just don%26#39;t want any surprises or disappointments at the counter.

Free upgrades are always nice, unless you don%26#39;t need the space and the bigger car will use more gas.

Costco is pretty centrally located between the South and East shores. It%26#39;s not too far from the airport. The gas is usually cheaper than elsewhere on the island.

Happy car rental shopping!

We used Discount Hawaii Car Rental last year on Maui and it was much, much cheaper than I could get through Costco or any of the chains (Alamo, etc). I%26#39;m planning to use them again this year on Kauai.

thank you everyone ! I think I%26#39;m gonna look into the Discount Hawaii Car Rental or Hawaii Drive-O....

I';ll skip Costco for now!

I was one of the posters who has used the Costco site to rent cars on Kauai. it was actually recommended to me by the counterperson at Alamo. I had asked him what to use to get the best rate - my BCAA or my Entertainment book and he said neither - Costco gets the best rates. Next time I went to Kauai I rented this way and it was a great deal - Rented a midsize for 8 days, got the Costco rate and a $20 off coupon from the website. Then got upgraded to a SUV as no mid-size available when I went to pick up.

Renting through the Costco site also gives you a second driver for free.

My parents, who spend two months in Kauai each year, now rent through Costco. Last year the company they used (can%26#39;t remember which but it%26#39;s one of the big names) charged them about $9.00 per day for the additional driver. When you are renting for 56 days that really adds up.

My sister%26#39;s law firm also used the Costco site when arranging for cars in Maui last year for their company retreat as they found it the best deal after researching it.

I agree with the earlier poster that if you don%26#39;t have a membership and wouldn%26#39;t be using it outside this trip it%26#39;s probably not worth it but if you would it%26#39;s definately worth checking into.

Hi, we got a great rate through Costco, but if you don%26#39;t want to get a membership you might want to checkout Hotwire. I got an email yesterday about their great Hawaii car rental rates and the rate we got from Costco was only slightly less about $20 than the total cost. We have used Hotwire several times for rental car and have been very happy.

I got rate quotes through both Costco %26amp; Hawaii Discount. In Oahu I got a better deal through Costco. For Maui %26amp; BI, Hawaii Discount beat Costco hands down! I am saving about $70 in Maui %26amp; $90 in the BI.
