I am considering renting a great house in Haiku for three weeks in August, but getting some mixed messages on this forum about what kind of area it is, we will hire a car of course, so are there bars and restaurants within easy reach? We would like to go out for dinner and have a few drinks at night, nothing mad but a bit of nightlife would be nice...
Should I consider somewhere else???

Haiku is a beautiful area- but if you are looking for nightlife, it is not the right place. It is residential, and there are some small restaraunts but nothing like it sounds like what you want. You would have to drive to Makawao or Paia for nicer places- both about 15 minutes give or take. Kahului is about 30 minutes away.
It really depends on how far you are willing to drive.

Look in West Maui or South Maui, where the restaurants and bars are located. Lahaina/Kaanapali has the most ';nightlife';, but don%26#39;t expect anything like Dublin or any big city. Honolulu, Waikiki (on Oahu) would be much ';buzzier';.
