How long does it take to drive the island? I was wondering because I just bought a book with all kinds of sights to see and we haven%26#39;t narrowed them down yet but looks like there is a lot to see and do.
The crater, the upcountry, road to hana, check out all the beaches, did I forget anything?

Has anyone driven the whole island before?
Last March we drove from Kaanapali (the Westin) all the way around the road to Hana. That did not include the North and Western ends of the island, just the road from Kaanapali to Hana all the way around back to Kaanapali. It took a good 12 hours with a few stops to pick up a boxed lunch , take pictures, and hit a couple of nice beaches. That is basically the mid to south end of the island. I understand there was an earthquake that shut down a portion of the road just past Hana, and I don%26#39;t know if it is reopened yet. We are going again in March and would like to make the drive again stopping to hike the Pipiwai Trail, so hope it opens! I would assume it would take most all day and possibly into the night to drive the entire island. We are going to drive the North and East end this March and do that seperately from the Hana drive.
Has anyone driven the whole island before?
We drove all over the island in 2006- we wanted to see everything. The only place we didn%26#39;t go was beyond the blowhole on the northern side.
I don%26#39;t recommend driving the whole thing in one day.
Going to Hana takes an entire day and it%26#39;s gorgeous, but a long drive.
The south side of the island where La Perouse Bay and Big Beach (Makena) are is very amazing. La Perouse Bay is at the southernmost tip, where the hot lava met the ocean. Quite a surreal contrast of colors and landscapes.
The blowhole up north is also really cool.
I definitely wouldn%26#39;t do the drive in one day but now it looks like definitely do the drive to hana, upcountry and the crater.
What beaches have you driven to? Anyone know how far the beach is the one with the really big waves, maybe like shark beach, i%26#39;m not sure if that is what its called, its supposed to be right by or at Paia.
Were staying in Lahaina. We just want to see those waves not swim in them.
also any ideas on what there is to do on the way to Malakula beach, near or past wailea.

The beach by Paia is the ';windsurfer'; beach, if that%26#39;s what you are referring to. Sorry but don%26#39;t have the name in front of me. It%26#39;s close to the airport, around 10-15 minutes depending on traffic.
So, it%26#39;s about 30-45 minutes from Lahaina.
Near Wailea: Big Beach (Makena), Little Beach (nude beach), Ahihi cove (great snorkeling), La Perouse Bay (stunning scenery/lava.)
From Lahaina, if you go north past Kaanapali, the blowhole is amazing and worth the drive, in my opinion.

Are you talking about Hookipia(sp?)
I believe CC is talking about Jaws.
This is a surf break, not a beach. I don%26#39;t have exact mileage, but if memory serves correct (it has been 8 years), it is about 10 minutes or so past Ho%26#39;okipa. The waves can be really BIG here, but only break a few days throughout the winter months on average when the surf is at its highest.
Ho%26#39;okipa is a windsurfer beach with big waves near Paia. I was up last night adding that to my list of beaches to view.
I%26#39;m sorry old age must be setting in, haaaaaaaa. i was talking about Jaws, just couldn%26#39;t think of it so I decided to call it shark beach, haaaaa, imagine that.
I new it was near paia. How does one get Jaws and also have you guys heard of Maluaka beach just south of makena?
we are supposed to do our vow renewal there on maluaka.

Mre. S. and I have been all the way around but certainly not in one day. The bridge out beyond Hana will make it impossible to go around that end now. I would go up to the Winery just to look at the views however. The Kapalua to Wailuku trip is fun but scarier IMHO than the Road to Hana. Be sure to go clockwise. We never gave ourselves time limits to see things. You need to relax and look at what you are interested in not keep watching the clock.
I asked this question about Jaws a few months back cause I wanted to check it out as well. Locals on here told me that the road is pretty nasty , blocked off with cars to keep people out. The big waves dont happen very often. I was told even if you were to go out there just to look its nothing specatcular.
