I am going to Maui this summer for my honeymoon and one of the things we are considering doing is driving the Road to Hana. My question is- I am absolutely terrified of windy, scary roads in the mountains. I have heard mixed things- is the road such that I won%26#39;t be able to enjoy myself?? I would like to do it but if I will be terrified the whole time it doesn%26#39;t seem like it would be that enjoyable!
Road to Hana question
It sounds like the road to Hana may not be for you. The road has tons of tight turns and much of it is high on the mountainside. It%26#39;s beautiful in my opinion but if that stuff scares you, you don%26#39;t want anything ruining your trip. There is so much other stuff to do on Maui that missing that won%26#39;t be a big issue.
Road to Hana question
I agree with the other poster. It%26#39;s not worth doing if you think you could get scared. My sis gets like you, but she wanted to try the Road to Hana the last time we went. We made sure she sat up front with my hubby. He drove slow and pulled over everytime someone was behind us, plus we had multiple stops along the way. It made her ride easy and enjoyable. The drive is beautiful.
FYI - Don%26#39;t let anyone talk you into driving around the west side. Yeah its quicker, it beautiful, but it was a white knuckler in spots and my sis turned several shades of green! We waited three years before she tried Hana and she did great!
Hope this helps!
I don%26#39;t think it%26#39;s that scary and I am kind of a wimp. You should give it a try.
We drove the road last March and we loved it. My husband went rather slow and we got out and took pictures when it was possible. I think it is important to break up the trip with stops at points of interest and beaches. I just didn%26#39;t think it was bad at all and we drove all the way around. The upcountry after you pass Hana is really neat---old lava flows and free-roaming cattle. The key is.....just don%26#39;t get in a hurry, give the right of way if it is needed on one-lane bridges and I think you%26#39;ll be fine. Enjoy!
It%26#39;s a long ride if it turns out you don%26#39;t like it.
Suggestion: before committing a whole day that may be a bummer for you both, go drive up the west side past Kapalua and up to the northern tip. It%26#39;s very lovely, but SHORTER and you can turn around and get back quickly! If that one is scary don%26#39;t go to Hana and beyond.
I wouldn%26#39;t go. There is over 400 turns and we had so many people going WAY too fast about hitting us numerous times.
