Has anyone heard or read about the brush fire upper slopes of Haleakala? In the Hawaiian news states over 600 acres affected.
No one seems to mention if anyone has been injured...imagine some loss of wildlife?
Brush fire
Watched three local newscasts on it tonight ... none of the stations ran it as the top story -- probably because no one has been injured and right now it%26#39;s moving away from populated areas. They said nothing about the wildlife, sorry I can%26#39;t tell you any more!
Brush fire
We drove from Lahaina towards Paia today and the fire was quite evident. The winds seemed to be kicking up a bit more today than yesterday. In fact, we could actually see separate fire fronts since smoke was being blown upward towards and over Haleakala. So I wouldn%26#39;t be surprised if they closed the visitor center again. I don%26#39;t think this week is a good time to plan a trip up Haleakala. The ash and smoke from the fire is a surely a health concern despite what folks only interested in the tourism dollars might say.
hey, a firsthand report, thanks!
the news also mentioned the respiratory issue. The fire is only 30% contained.
I just heard about this. I am so worried.
My husbands been up there battling this thing since it first broke out last Tuesday. It%26#39;s up near Poli Poli state park. People in Kula are keeping a very close (and nervous) eye on it but as of right now it is NOT threatening any homes.
godd bless your husband. Will you keep us posted? Do they know how it started? Hale Malu can see it on Molokai.
Um, I think he said at this point the cause was undetermined. Friday night it was very visible from downtown, almost pretty ya know with the orange flames against the dark background. I don%26#39;t think husband finds it too pretty though!
I%26#39;m sure he doesn%26#39;t. Is he a volunteer fire fighter or a full time fire fighter on the island?
how sad! we need rain. we can see a brown cloud hanging over the ocean to the south of here, coming from that fire. the fire is threatening endemic species up there.
What a shame! I hope it gets knocked down quickly.
