Do I need a 4wd rental vehicle?

I plan on doing the Nualolo-Awa%26#39;awapuhi LoopTrail and kalalau trail in May but wondering about access to the trail heads if its rainy. Thanks again!

Do I need a 4wd rental vehicle?

waker

trail head for the Awa Awa puhi, Nualolo Loop, is just off waimea canyon road a bit passed the Koke%26#39;e Lodge. NO 4WHEEL DRIVE IS REQUIRED. No worries. (Or before the lodge if you are starting with the nualolo.)

The KALALAU TRAIL. Well, you can park your rental car next to the trail head, which is right across from Ke%26#39;e beach.

One thing. the KALALAU TRAIL is about 11 miles one way to the valley, You need a permit. And the last scoop was they were no longer issuing any permits due to the dangerous conditions.

However, what visitors call the kalalau, can be the first two miles, NO PERMIT REQUIRED, and it is the ';HANAKAPIAI '; TRAIL. Pronounced ( Hana-kop-ee-eye )......it leads to Hanakapiai beach...probably a real good idea to stay out of the ocean. If you are feeling enegetic, you can hike inland another 2 miles to the watefall.

NO PERMIT REQUIRED.

The rest of the Kalalau Trail continues along the Napali from Hanakapiai beach to the Kalalau valley. So, it is just that we differentiate between the Hanakapiai Trial ( 2 miles ),and the Kalalau Trail (9) more miles, total (11), which is a whole diffent beastie.

Regardless, no 4 wheel drive is necessary at all. Zip.
