Ok....I ~think~ we have narrowed down our 30th anniv trip to Hawaii to Kauai for 10 days. We LOVE St. John, and I think this island is the one for us! Looking for recommendations on an oceanfront condo-from most posts, looks like we will want to be on the north end of the island in mid-September? We do not like the crowded resorts. Will the water be warm enough to snorkel?
Thanks for all of the great advice!
OF condo in September-North?
Hi Julee --September ought to be great on the northshore. Your condo accomodations are going to be in Princeville -- lots of choices there. Princeville is set up high on cliffs, so they have beautiful elevated views of the ocean and Hanalei Bay. Our favorite for view is Pali Ke Kua, since there you can look out over the ocean and prtions of Hanalei Bay and the mountains beyond.
If you are looking for beachfront, you really have to take a look at cottages and houses. Anini Beach is a beautiful, quiet location. The Haena area is also nice with closer access to the best snorkeling locations. VRBO website is a good one to look at, also Sereneity Rentals for Anini locations.
Water should be as warm as it gets then.
OF condo in September-North?
Hi Julee,
We are also St. John lovers and decided to try something different and visit Kauai last November. The 2 islands are somewhat similar in that they both share the same relaxed atmosphere although nothing can be as ';relaxed'; as St. John! We did not do as much snorkeling in Kauai as we would have done in SJ - the water is a lot rougher - not the calm, relaxing waters of the Carribean. But there is so much more to see and do - hiking, helicopter, driving and exploring the island - it is a lot bigger than SJ. We stayed in Poipu and would probably stay in the North next time we visit (depending on the time of year).
