snorkeling in Waikiki

Family is coming to Waikiki end of August, staying at the Outrigger Waikiki on the Beach. We will not be renting a car, so are there any places for snorkeling within walking distance of Outrigger Waikiki?

Yes.

Walk toward Diamond Head until you reach the snack bar at Kapiolani Park. There is a seawall/walkway extending out into the water and on the right side is good snorkeling. The reef there is raw and you should have a care, but there is plenty of sandy bottom that you can stand on. The water is cloudy when the surf is high, but there are a ton of fish of many kinds.

You should not miss the snorkeling at Hanauma %26#39;Bay. Even though you are not renting a car, you can catch the shuttle near the Outrigger and go snorkeling out there. They rent the equipment at the park and the shuttles are frequent. The shuttle is the best way to go,becaue you don%26#39;t have to worry about getting a parking place.

Also, you want to take the shuttle to Diamond Head for the walk to the top for a spectacular view of the island.

The snorkeling is not that special in Waikiki.

Enjoy!!

Thanks for the info! Plan to go on to Maui from there anddo a lot of snorkeling there , but we have a ';beach day'; planned for Waikiki Beach so I thought we could break up the day by doing some close by snorkeling. Thanks again!

Last time I was there (about 4 or 5 years ago), there were a fiew juvenile fish out about 30 ft or so. There was a short wall (about 4 or 5 feet) out there and lots of tiny corals. Nothing like at Hanauma Bay, but interesting in it%26#39;s own way---like a fish nursery. It was out from the beach near the Outrigger Reef by Beach street.
