Whale watching and pregnancy

The hubby and I are taking our third trip to Kauai for a final pre-baby fling. I%26#39;ll be 24 weeks along when we arrive on the island.

I have always wanted to visit during whale season and we finally are (Feb. 8) but I%26#39;m not sure if there are any whale watching cruises out there that will be calm enough for me in my %26#39;delicate%26#39; condition. Any recommendations? If not, any good spots to see this awesome sight from land? We traveled with Holoholo to Ni%26#39;ihau last September and it was a lot of fun, but very rough. Thanks for the help!

all depends on the weather/swell. You might get a calm day in winter.

Today we have 30 mile winds with 50ish gusts. I%26#39;m losing power every 10 min for a sec or so (yeah backup batteries). You%26#39;d have to put a gun to my head to make me go out today.

From land, the Kilauea Lighthouse is a good spot. They loan you nice binoculars.

That%26#39;s exactly what I needed to know! I can imagine that the ocean conditions are rather unpredicatable but I%26#39;d still like to see them from land. Some of the pictures I%26#39;ve seen make it look like they get pretty close to shore.

That trip to Ni%26#39;ihau was bad enough last year that I don%26#39;t think I will do it again. The channel was so choppy. One guy almost got thrown off the boat.

Thanks for your response!

We%26#39;re on Maui every February. You%26#39;ll see plenty of whales from shore!

So nice that you will have this holiday before the excitement (and stress) of becoming parents for the first time. Much happiness!

Liz,

Dave is absolutely correct, and today we have small craft advsiories along our coast, with gale warnings in the channels.

Whale season is winter, and the swells on the north and west shores are predicted to be higher today....35 to possibly 40 feet.

Plus we still have some of the strong southerly winds expected.

Lets take care of you, and that baby, which is certainly a much higher priority than being aboard a pounding vessel in rough seas.

Bow burried, spray and water flying over the decks, jolts from the hull pounding, and difficulty in even trying to stand up if you had to.

Not too pleasant on an expectant new mom.

Yes, you can see WHALES from shore. They will be out a ways, but we seem them all the time along the south shore, whether hiking along the Heritage trail, by the Embassy, or bbqing at poipu, or just sitting on the beach, or hiking the lithified cliff trail near the hyatt.

How about this, once the family is roaming about on planet earth, make a return visit, and take a whale watch napali trip then. For, now, just kinda watch from land. '; SHE BLOWS !!!!

Take good care there, MOM !!

We just arrived back last night. Everyday we were able to see whales from the beach. We stayed at the Islander on the Beach on the east shore and spotted them several times everyday. Also from the ligthouse on the north shore and at Salt Pond beach. The water spouts are easy to spot and then just use your binoculars to get a better view.

Thank you all for the wonderful advice and well wishes! We will just spend a bunch of time on the shore with our binoculars and zoom lens. I%26#39;m sure the baby won%26#39;t mind a trip back to Kauai in a few years! :) I know I won%26#39;t.
