Are you allowed to drive your rental car to Hana? Has anyone taken a tour and are they expensive?
road to Hana
it looks like rental cars on parade when you go to (or from) Hana
Some rental co dont want you to drive past Hana (all the way around) but this could have changes, its been a few years for me
Go early if you go or take a night in Hana to realy enjoy it
get the Maui Revealed guide book (the blue book) so a few nice side drives of the main road
road to Hana
When we were there in Jan, we couldn%26#39;t drive the south coast because one of the roads was washed out and the car rental company didn%26#39;t want to risk any damage.
However we had no problem driving all the way to Hana on the north coast on the Hana highway. It wasn%26#39;t really very busy either, but maybe its because it was a monday.
Bring some motion sickness pills just in case. Its very twisty.
No problem driving to Hana with a rental. The road beyond Oheo Gulch is supposed to be a no-no, but I believe that%26#39;s a moot point now because the road has been closed since the earthquake in October.
The drive is beautiful. Get a copy of Maui Mile by Mile and do it at your own pace. Research the places you really want to see and enjoy the journey.

Tours cost $110+ for adults, and children often get at discount to about $80+. Tour guides tend to be helpful and knowledgable, as they appreciate a tip. The more expensive tours tend to have less passengers (six or so), with bigger , less expensive vans holding up to 20 passengers.
There is no problem with driving your rental car on the road to Hana if you do the %26#39;clockwise%26#39; trip that everyone does.
Due to the October 2006 earthquake in the channel between east Maui and the Big Island, the road beyond Oheo Gulch (this is PAST Hana, so you probably won%26#39;t even go this far) is closed to traffic for a mile or so at mile marker 40 due to potential rock slides. So for now, you have to turn around and finish your trip by retracing your path back along the road to Hana.
I have detailed pages describing our Hana trips at lahaina-family-vacation.com/road-to-hana.html
